We answered a call to a chimney fire on Texada Drive. The resident had reported acrid smelling smoke coming from the chimney.
HIFR arrived to find the chimney fire had burned itself out. We extinguished the fire inside the woodstove and took the stovepipe apart for inspection. There were burning embers on the smoke plate of the stove and at the elbow of the stovepipe indicating a recent chimney fire.
Command sent a member down into the crawlspace to inspect the cleanout at the bottom of the chimney. The chimney was reasonably clean and there was no indication of continued burning.
Thanks to Quinn for the photos.
you had to send the Big Guy down the hole????
He was the only one not wearing an air pack.
Thanks to the Hornby Island Fire Department’s great team effort in dealing with this potential disaster warded off by my good neighbour and friend, Mike Tarbotton whose nose led him to wonder it there was a chimney fire in the works. (I shudder to think what would’ve transpired if the fire was left undetected any longer….) Deputy Chief Doug has offered a few suggestions in order to avoid “a sequel” – i.e.: replace the stovepipe with a double walled pipe; say “no” to green wood; clean the chimney twice (not just once) a year; etc. With huge gratitude, Quinn
